KZN LAW FIRM APPOINTS NEW PARTNERS

Shamla Pather

Shamla Pather and Patrick Forbes have been appointed as directors of Garlicke & Bousfield Inc.

 hamla obtained a BProc from the University of Durban-Westville in 1994 and, after serving articles, was admitted as an attorney in 1998. She then joined a local law firm as a professional assistant becoming a partner in 2003.In 2015 Shamla moved to Garlicke & Bousfield Inc as an executive consultant in the litigation department specialising in family law and commercial litigation.

 

In 2008 and 2011 Shamla was appointed as a panel attorney for the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa, for two three year contracts. She has also acted for various governmental organisations and large national companies.   She was admitted as a member of the International Bar Association in 2003 and in 2012 was nominated for the Businesswomen’s Association Regional Business Achievers Award: Professional Category, which she won.

Shamla is passionate about the empowerment of women and the freedom of children and is a member of the board of directors of the Crisis Care Centre for abused women and children in Chatsworth.

 

As a busy working mother Shamla also finds time to get involved in fund-raising activities to promote upliftment programmes for education and social welfare.

Patrick completed a BSc at Rhodes University in 2002 and a LLB in 2004 and is currently working on an LLM in environmental law at the University of Kwazulu-Natal.Patrick joined Garlicke & Bousfield Inc as a candidate attorney in June 2011 and after completing his articles remained on as a professional assistant.

 

Patrick specialises in insurance and environmental law and is also involved in general commercial litigation.   His continued interest in environmental matters is reflected in his dealing with the planning and execution of development projects and in regard to town planning issues and compliance with the relevant laws and regulations.

 

Patrick has presented seminars to property developers, banks and clients on environmental liability and has published articles on recent developments relating to environmental management legislation, including the energy efficiency building regulations.   He is also an active member of the Environmental Law Association of South Africa, having presented at regional events on topical issues.
